The Festive Season at the S&G

The standard at the S&G Monday Jazz night just keeps on improving although it’s been pretty high ever since I started going there over three years ago.

We had a special Christmas treat when Ray Roberts returned after an absence of a few years. It was lovely to hear his mellow sax again but Ray, ever the perfectionist, felt that he hadn’t done himself justice. All I could say was that an off night from him is still better than most players on top form. Now that the bar is bigger and less smoky, I hope we can lure him back, even if only to sit in for a few.

The next week we had another guest who hadn’t appeared there for years but I was mighty impressed with Chloe’s versatile vocals. I walked in on God Bless The Child and, since Lady ‘day is my top singer, I was immediately hooked and hope to hear Chloe again when she is next in Falmouth.

This Monday it was Monty Ray who was in top form, as were the trio, particularly Max who was in experimental mode and pulled most of it off to great effect. Sadly, there were too many empty tables in the place for once, New Year blues I guess!

As if that’s not enough, we have Martin Dale again on the 13th. Another must – and so it goes on. Ain’t we blessed!
